Supplements and botanical medicines
As part of a holistic treatment approach, some women may find certain supplements beneficial. Large studies looking at the effectiveness of supplements are limited, but some that show promise include:
⢠curcumin (turmeric), which in endometriosis lesions accelerates healthy cell death, suppresses local production of oestrogen and inhibits formation of new blood vessels as well as blocking the effects of toll-like receptors. The usual dose is 1000 milligrams twice daily.
⢠zinc, which repairs intestinal permeability to help normalise immune function, is anti-inflammatory and helps to relieve pain. The usual dose is 30 milligrams a day taken with food.
⢠NAC (N-acetyl cysteine amino acid), an antioxidant and immune regulator that can help reduce inflammation and pain. In a very small 2013 study of 92 women, 47 took 600 milligrams of NAC three times a day for three months and 45 took a placebo. Of those who took NAC, 24 women (i.e. half) cancelled their scheduled laparoscopy due to a decrease in symptoms or because they had become pregnant, compared with one woman in the placebo group.
⢠magnesium, taken daily or with periods, it has been shown in some studies to be more effective than a placebo at improving period pain. It works as an anti-prostaglandin to reduce inflammation. The usual dose is 300 milligrams at night throughout the cycle and/or 300â600 milligrams during the period. I usually recommend magnesium glycinate because magnesium citrate can cause loose stools in some women.
⢠fish oil (omega-3), which reduces prostaglandin synthesis and thus inflammation. The suggested dose is 1000 milligrams daily.
⢠vitamin D, several studies have shown if a blood test reveals low vitamin D levels, vitamin D supplements may improve period pain by reducing prostaglandin synthesis.
⢠probiotics, which are helpful in restoring a healthy gut biome and reducing gut symptoms and pelvic pain.
